About the film

In a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a sprawling levee, a six-year-old girl, Hushpuppy, exists on the brink of orphanhood. Buoyed by her childish optimism and extraordinary imagination, she believes that the natural order is in balance with the universe until a fierce storm changes her reality. Desperate to repair the structure of her world in order to save her ailing father and sinking home, this tiny hero must learn to survive unstoppable catastrophes of epic proportions.

Beasts of the Southern Wild is the four-time Academy Award nominated feature debut from director Benh Zeitlin and his filmmaking family, Court 13 Films, starring newcomers Quvenzhané Wallis and Dwight Henry.

Beasts was willed into being by a community of filmmakers, artists, and artisans, as revelrous and resilient as the Bathtub residents themselves. An equally dedicated audience has embraced the film and kept it alive. Thank you for joining our brigade. Films come and go, but a family like this is forever.
